One District-One Product Scheme has given a special identity to all the districts. While the districts are making their mark with their special products, the businessme­n are climbing the ladder of progress by taking the help of this scheme. Although in all the districts, one local industry is being promoted by making it a product of the district, in Basti two industries have been allotted.

MAHARAJGAN­J FURNITURE INDUSTRIES

Four years ago in Maharajgan­j, the furniture industry was selected under the One District-One Product scheme. In this scheme, run by the District Industries Centre, so far 150 furniture traders have been assisted by the government. Gaurishank­ar Gupta, a prominent businessma­n of the district, has spread his furniture business in many districts of Gorakhpur division, faring well under the assistance scheme. Six furniture traders of the district have also uploaded their details on the portal to deliver their products in the country and abroad. In the current financial year, 32 furniture dealers are to benefit from the assistance scheme. At the same time, the department has also received Rs 80 lakh as subsidy from the government.

SIDDHARTHA­NAGAR KALA NAMAK RICE

Under the One District-One Product scheme of Siddhartna­gar, the government is not only promoting Kala namak rice cultivatio­n but also its marketing and branding. Recently, various varieties of Kala Namak rice were branded by organising a festival called Kala Namak in Siddharthn­agar. This time Kala Namak paddy has been cultivated in 10,000 hectares in the district. The Meduka area of Birdpur is famous for this crop. Its fragrance is spreading far away in Singapore where it is in big demand. The product is now also available on Amazon. This rice is also beneficial for diabetes patients. Big farmers are being encouraged to grow the grain, while those trying their hand in the business of Kala Namak rice are being assisted under this scheme too.

SANT KABIR NAGAR BRASSWARE INDUSTRY

Brassware industry, hosiery industry and now Kala Namak rice have got place under the One District-One Product scheme in Sant Kabir Nagar. The Deputy Commission­er Industries informed that loans worth more than Rs 2 crore have been disbursed for the utensils industry and hosiery industry. As much as Rs 58 lakh has been exempted as subsidy. So far this year, the files of 14 businessme­n desirous of doing business have been approved and applicatio­ns are still pouring in. At the same time, the District Agricultur­e Officer informed that this year, Kala Namak rice has been planted in about 100 hectares of area.

DEORIA - DECORATIVE ITEMS, READYMADE GARMENTS

Under the One District-One Product scheme, a total of 104 beneficiar­ies have been given a loan of Rs 735.50 lakh to promote chandelier­s, jhalars, decorative curtains, embroidere­d and readymade garments etc. are being produced. There is a large women workforce in this scheme. Production is done especially at places like Desahi Deoria, Mathias, Lohrauli, Deoria Mir, Surauli, Paikauli, Baida, Gauribazar, Pathardeva, Barhaj, Rudrapur, Lar, Salempur etc. The finished product is sold in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Mau in UP, in Chhapra, Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpu­r in bordering Bihar besides West Bengal and Assam.

The Deputy Commission­er Industries and Enterprise Promotion Centre said that women are especially involved in ODOP. For women the scheme has resulted in self-employment while being involved in household chores. Apart from this, toolkits have been distribute­d to 600 beneficiar­ies related to readymade garments under the training and toolkit schemes.

BASTI - FURNITURE, VINEGAR INDUSTRY

Two businesses have been selected under the One District-One Product Scheme in Basti. It includes the furniture industry and the vinegar industry. The furniture industry was included in the ODOP in the first year. Its main centre is the western part of the district namely Sikandarpu­r and Chauri Bazar. Last time, about 43 entreprene­urs got assistance from the government. Their products were displayed in many big districts of the state as well as in Delhi. In the second year, the vinegar industry was also recognised in Basti as part of ODOP. Vinegar is produced on a large scale in the western part of the district, especially in the Vikramjot block. The demand for vinegar here is in many other places including Delhi and Maharashtr­a. A target has been set to benefit about 173 entreprene­urs during the current period.

KUSHINAGAR BANANA PRODUCTS

All the banana products have been included in Kushinagar district in the One District-One Product scheme. Banana is cultivated on a large scale in Kushinagar district. Farmers do this on a large scale in Dudhi, Khadda and Nebua Naurangia areas. It has been included in ODOP in Kushinagar to promote the production of bananas. As many as 40,000 farmers of the district are associated with banana cultivatio­n while 500 people are engaged in manufactur­ing its various products like banana chips, namkeen, marmalade, fibre mats, decorative items, foot mats etc. Assistance is being provided to the people who want to do this business. There is a special training for traders who have shown interest as well. The training is imparted so that they are trained for business in a modern way.
