AGRA: A CID team from West Bengal police, in plain clothes, was roughed up when they reached Gandhi Nagar area under Gandhi Park police station of Aligarh on Friday night to arrest a BJP leader.

The BJP leader had declared a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who brings the head of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in 2017.

“The team of CID from West Bengal police had reached Gandhi Nagar in Aligarh on Friday night. The visiting team was in plain clothes and had come for investigation regarding the old matter,” informed Mohsin Khan, the circle officer (second) in Aligarh.

“During the investigation, the West Bengal CID team got involved in some dispute with the locals. As tension mounted and on receiving information Aligarh police reached the spot and brought the CID team safely to the police station. The team is safe and left for West Bengal on Saturday,” Khan stated while clarifying that no arrest was made.

“The team from West Bengal has not submitted any complaint, yet the matter is being investigated,” he added.

The matter relates to Dinesh Varshney, the former ‘mandal adhyaksh’ of BJP Yuva Morcha, who had declared a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone bringing the head of the chief minister Mamta Banerjee.

Varshney statement came after activists of Hindu Jagran Manch were lathi-charged on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in August 2017 in Birbhum, West Bengal.

However, BJP had distanced itself from Varshney’s comments.

Cases were lodged in West Bengal against Varshney, but he did turn up for hearing in the courts and a CID team came to Aligarh, on Friday night, to serve the notice for attachment under the criminal procedure code at the residence of Varshney.

BJP leader and MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam too reached the house of Varshney and blamed local police in Aligarh for ‘mishandling’ the matter which resulted in such chaos and confusion.

According to Gautam, police had not followed the proper procedure required in such cases. BJP leaders on reaching the Gandhi Nagar area made clear that no party workers could be taken away in such a manner
