Dengue hits Kanpur hard every 2 yrs: Study
KANPUR HAS SEEN ABOUT 50 DEATHS IN THE PAST ONE MONTH
KANPUR: A study has indicated that dengue strikes Kanpur with full force every two years.
The Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College’s microbiology department has conducted the statistical study at a time when cases of dengue are being reported in Kanpur again.
Dr Vikas Mishra, professor at the microbiology department, said the team studied dengue positive reports of 10,183 patients of the past five years to reach this conclusion.
“This research is being published in an international medical journal. Kanpur will play the role of a guide in the further research in this direction,” he said.
If preparations were made accordingly, dengue could be effectively dealt with, he said.
“Dengue should not be seen in terms of seasonal change, it remains at the peak between September and October and its effects stretch till December,” said the study.
As per the findings, the dengue patients in Kanpur face organ failure, plasma leakage and internal bleeding. There were four strains of dengue active in Kanpur where they mutate each time, according to the study.
Kanpur has seen about 50 deaths in the past one month— 12 were reported from village Kursauli in Kalyanpur in a week— and 400 people were under treatment at government and private hospitals, according to health officials who visited the village with the DM on Thursday night.
The Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital here is getting 100 cases of high fever and suspected dengue each day, resulting in two patients sharing one bed, according to authorities of the medical college who did not wish to be named.
While private labs were receiving 700 samples each day, the microbiology lab of GSVM Medical College was getting 200 samples from the health department daily.
