The Crown, Ted Lasso, The Queen’s Gambit top at the very white Emmys
IUNLIKE LAST YEAR’S VIRTUAL CEREMONY, A STRICT GUEST LIST OF 500-ODD NOMINEES GATHERED UNDER STRICT PANDEMIC PRECAUTIONS WITH MANY FASHION STANDOUTS.
t was a ceremony dominated by the products of streaming services — The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit and Ted Lasso — taking home top honours at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, USA.
The Emmys were unable to capitalise on its historic and diverse nomination fields with all major acting trophies going to white actors. Although a record number of 49 nonwhite creatives were nominated in the acting and reality competition categories heading into Sunday night, white actors ultimately swept all 12 lead and supporting races across the comedy, drama and limited series categories. The ceremony also proved disappointing to those scrutinising diversity in Hollywood. The record number of nominees of colour yielded only two black winners, including RuPaul for RuPaul’s Drag Race and Michaela Coel for I May Destroy You.
The Crown stars Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor won the top drama acting honours, with Jason Sudeikis, star of the warm-hearted Ted Lasso, and Jean Smart of the generation-gap story Hacks, emerging as winners on the comedy side.
“I lost my daddy during COVID, and he would have loved all of this,” a tearful Coleman shared. She attended the London gathering for The Crown nominees.
The limited series lead actress award went to Kate Winslet, who saluted her sister nominees.
