UP’s long distance runners shine at nationals

LUCKNOW : Long distance runners from Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday stamped their supremacy in 10,000m event at the National U23 Athletics Championsh­ips, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Kartik Kumar bagged gold medal in the men’s 10,000m, clocking 30:41.66 seconds, whereas Kavita Yadav (36:25.19) bagged silver medal in the women’s 10,000m. In the women’s 3000m steeplecha­se UP’s Kajal Sharma (10:47.18) bagged silver, pushing compatrior Rebi Pal (10:50.42) to third position. Strong woman Kashish Singh completed the medals tally for UP on the day, claiming a bronze medal in the hammer throw event, hurling the chained ball to distance of 51.79 metre.

CHAMPIONSH­IP SERIES

Unseeded Harsh Chitlangia of West Bengal continued his good run in the AITA Under-18 Championsh­ip Series, brushing aside sixth-seed Vikesh Chaurasiya of hosts Uttar Pradesh 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets to make it to the boy’s singles semi-finals, at the Unnad Tennis Academy here on Wednesday.

Three others from Uttar Pradesh i.e. Pranav Mishra, Aniket Srivastava and Anshuman Singh too made it to the last four stage, notching up contrastin­g wins. Mishra beat Madhav Prakash, who conceded the match in midway, Srivastava defeated Bihar’s Vaibhav Singh 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, and Singh outplayed Mukul Lodhi 6-3, 6-3.

IEDNTICAL WINS

It was a day of identical wins in the 2nd Rajeshwari Devi Thakur Das Memorial Football Tournament here on Wednesday. RA Boys defeated New Boys Club 2-1 in the first match of the day, at the Chowk Stadium, whereas Chowk Sporting Club defeated LDA Club (B) also by 2-1.

YUVRAJ EXCELS

Yuvraj Chaudhary won the 25m centre fire pistol event gold at the 44th Small Bore Shooting Championsh­ip, at the Nadarganj Shooting Range. Sachin Malik and Gaurav Sharma finished second and third, respective­ly. In the team championsh­ip, Baghpat stood top, whereas Meerut and of Agra stood second and third, respective­ly. Soumya Dhyani emerged victorious in the women’s individual event. She was followed by Shivani Choudhary and Vatsala Agarwal.
