: City-based doctors and nurses took out a march on Thursday to protest the lodging of a murder case against a woman doctor in Rajasthan, who allegedly died by suicide after being apparently harassed by the kin of a patient who died during delivery.

“A 22-year-old woman died due to excessive bleeding despite best efforts by doctors during delivery for her fourth child. The police lodged a case under section 302 for murder and as a result of harassment by police and family of the patient a young doctor in Dausa, Rajasthan, Dr Archana Sharma committed suicide,” said Dr Pranjal Agrawal, joint secretary Indian Medical Association (IMA), Lucknow branch.

“The incident needs immediate action against those responsible for death of the doctor. Why should a case of murder be

filed against a doctor who tried to save life,” said Dr PK Gupta, former president IMA, Lucknow.

Doctors from various organisations as well as nurses joined the march from IMA Bhavan to Shaheed Smarak.

“Any death can be investigated and if at a hospital the investigation for a medical negligence can be done by a panel of experts but filing a murder charge is like deciding the crime even before it is proven,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general association of international doctors.

Dr Anoop Agrawal, Dr Manish Tandon, Dr Virendra Kumar, Dr Sanjay Saxena, Dr Rama Srivastava, participated with other medical professionals in the march.

Doctors held placards with slogans “Degree hain to case hai Jhola hai to safe hai” (With a medical degree there will be case and with bag or for a quack it is safe).
