28% of crorepati winners scored 50%+ victory margin

Among the victors in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, 51 (25%) of the 205 winners who declared criminal cases triumphed by a vote share of 50% and above, said the Associatio­n for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in a press statement on Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh assembly has 403 seats.

Associatio­n for Democratic Reforms and Uttar Pradesh Election Watch analysed the vote share for the all 403 constituen­cies in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections-2022.

“In all, 103 (28%) out of 366 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50% and above,” said Sanjay Singh, coordinato­r, ADR.

Seventy-eight out of 205 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner-up with a clean background.

Among these 78 winners, three have won by a more than 30% margin of victory, said the press statement.

Among the 403 winners, there are 47 women and five of them won by a more than 20% victory margin. Anjula Singh Mahaur (BJP) from Hathras constituen­cy won with the highest vote share of 59%.

Out of the total 209 re-elected MLAs, none won with less than 35% of the vote share in their respective constituen­cies. Among them, 64 (31%) got more than 50% of the vote share. In all, 92 (44%) re-elected MLAs have won with a less than 10% of victory margin whereas 17 have won by more than 30%, said Santosh, coordinato­r ADR.

“Out of 9,21,62,896 votes polled in Uttar Pradesh assembly (elections)-2022, 6,37,304 (0.69%) were polled for NOTA. The NOTA button instated (installed) by ECI in 2013 gave the voters the option of rejecting all the candidates in their constituen­cy,” said Sanjay Singh.
