Family of 1965 war hero Capt Harjit Singh honoured
LUCKNOW : As part of the National Cadet Corps’ (NCC) initiative “Shaheedon Ko Shat Shat Naman” launched on Republic Day this year, three UP Naval Unit NCC, Lucknow, honoured the family of Captain Harjit Singh who valiantly fought and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation during the Indo Pak War of 1965.
On the fateful night of September 22, 1965, 21-year-old Singh led from the front and successfully repulsed a Pakistani attack at his battalion headquarters in the western sector.
He single-handedly coordinated the detachments while directing and encouraging his men to keep fighting. His efforts were instrumental in beating back the enemy’s attack. However, while directing operation he was hit by an RPG round which resulted in his death.
For his steadfastness, fearlessness and supreme sacrifice, he posthumously received “Mention in Despatches” (MiD) which recognises distinguished and meritorious service in operational areas and acts of gallantry.
Captain Harjit Singh’s family was presented with a “Shaurya Smriti Chinh” (a memento for valour) by Captain (Indian Navy) Navendu Saxena, the Commanding Officer of 3 UP Naval unit.
Singh’s family included his siblings Satjit Singh, Jasjit Singh, Anamika Singh and other relatives. They recalled the anecdotes from the brave captain’s life, his courage and commitment to the nation.
On this occasion, Master Chief Petty Officer RC Yadav, Head Assistant Manoj Kumar Shah and a team of naval sailors & civil staff of the unit paid floral tributes to the Captain Singh. A large number of NCC cadets also paid homage to him and honoured his family with a ceremonial guard.
