AGRA: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday questioned the timing of a few resignations in the party in support of SP leader and former minister Mohd Azam Khan and asked why such things did not happen two months ago (before the state assembly elections).

There were media reports about Mohd Azam Khan and Shivpal Yadav being displeased with the SP leadership and in the mood to distance themselves from the party and there were some resignations in the SP in support of Azam Khan. Those who quit blamed the SP leadership for not standing with Khan in his hour of crisis.

SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and party president Akhilesh Yadav, who were in Mainpuri on Thursday, met party workers and assessed results of the recently held assembly elections, including the setback to the party in Mainpuri.

Akhilesh denied any knowledge about uncle Shivpal Yadav moving towards the BJP but when asked repeatedly, he quipped that the BJP was ending ‘pariwarwad’.

Talking to newsmen, Akhilesh evaded questions related to both Azam and Shivpal.

“Why were these things not happening two months ago?” questioned Akhilesh on being repeatedly asked about Khan and resignations in his support.

“We had come here to meet party workers and pay our respects to Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on Ambedkar Jayanti and had no plans to interact with the media,” said Akhilesh.

He expressed ignorance about media reports on Shivpal Yadav getting closer to the BJP but when asked repeatedly, said that ‘BJP is ending ‘pariwarwad’’. It may be recalled that the BJP had been targeting SP for ‘pariwarwad’ (dynastic rule) and earlier the daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav had joined the BJP before the state assembly elections.

“The masses have given mandate to the Samajwadi Party to save democracy and fight growing inflation and unemployment and we will overhaul the party organization and get down to streets asking questions from the government,” said Akhilesh who targeted the BJP on rising crimes.

“The BJP needs to answer when the economy will revive, when senior citizens will get proper interest on savings and when will youth get employment,” he said, while condemning the arrest of a mediaperson in Ballia.

Akhilesh praised Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and lauded him for showing the path leading to respect for Constitution, brotherhood and equality in society and said that his party would move on the path shown by Dr Ambedkar.

Earlier, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh held a closed-door meeting with office -bearers of the party and analysed the results of assembly elections after offering floral tributes to portrait of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.
