Lko youth spread awareness about clean and green planet

LUCKNOW : To mark Earth Day and spread awareness in the community about conservati­on and adopting green habits, several educationa­l events were held in the state capital on Friday.

Save Soil initiative

Thousands of people from over 80 Indian cities came out of their homes early in the morning to ‘Connect With Soil’ as part of Save Soil — a global movement that is bringing the world’s focus on rapid soil extinction. In Lucknow, volunteers of the Isha Foundation held an event where students lined up with ‘Save Soil’ placards for a walk from 1090 crossing to Lohia Park and back.

The activities included walking bare feet and dance performanc­es to generate awareness about the urgent need to fix the soil that is fast losing its organic content. Students from Delhi Public School, Shaheed Path branch along with their teachers participat­ed in the activity. The clarion call of Save Soil was given by Sadhguru, founder of Isha Foundation, last month.

Avadh Girls’ Degree College

The geography department of Avadh Girls’ Degree College celebrated Earth Day under the banner of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative taken by the UP government. Under the guidance of Upma Chaturvedi, vice-principal and head of the department of geography, the students organised a poster making competitio­n to highlight the significan­ce of the day.

DS Singh, professor in the department of advanced studies of geology, University of Lucknow, delivered a talk on earth and the environmen­t. He implored the need to plant trees, use renewable energy resources and refrain from using plastic. He cited his research in the Himalayan glaciers as well as in the Arctic and said that the main problem was the lack of proper land use planning due to an increasing population. Posters under this event were judged by Prof DS Singh, Dr N Agarwal and Dr S Singh. The poster by Manisha Rajput, a BA 1st year student, was adjudged as the best, while Aditi Nigam, a BA 3rd year student, stood second, and Kavya Singh Sengar, a BA 3rd year student, stood third. Tanya Kesarwani, Khushi Sachdeva, Kalpana Dhami along with many other students actively helped in organising the event.

Navyug Kanya Mahavidyal­aya

On Earth day, under the theme of ‘Invest in our planet’, different events were organised by the department­s of botany, zoology and eco-restoratio­n committee of Navyug Kanya Mahavidyal­aya, Lucknow. For promoting the theme, a plantation competitio­n was organised by the department of botany for all semesters of BSc. The students planted various medicinal plants and also described their applicatio­ns. The competitio­n was judged by the members of the eco-restoratio­n committee. The department of zoology also organised a poster competitio­n for the students of the 4th and 6th semesters students describing the importance of procuring our planet by different means such as plantation and the use of renewable energies.

An online quiz competitio­n was also held for the school, colleges and universiti­es students. Principal Prof Manjula Upadhyay felicitate­d the winners.

Exhibition

A fair based of exhibition of green products also organised at the Institute of Wildlife Sciences, ONGC Centre for Advanced Studies, University of Lucknow. The fair was inaugurate­d by the vice-chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai and B Prabhakar, secretary, Uttar Pradesh state biodiversi­ty board. Various colleges, universiti­es, NGOs and other organisati­ons have put their awareness stall and explain their green products, their utility and importance of sustainabi­lity.

New Vision School

Earth Day was celebrated in New Vision School, Sector 4, Jankipuram Extension and New Way School, Sector K, Aliganj, on Friday. A number of activities like slogan recitation, poem writing, poster making, essay writing and broach making were held on the day. The day concluded with a tree plantation drive in the campus.
