Shamli’s Deepa bags a golden double in athletics

LUCKNOW: Shamli’s Deepa hogged the limelight on the opening day of the 55th UP State Annual U20 Athletics Championsh­ip, wresting a golden double, at the Sports Complex, Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad on Sunday.Deepa first clocked 18.36 seconds to finish top in the women’s 100m hurdles and then bagged the 400m hurdles gold too, clocking 1:07.03 seconds. Men’s 100m hurdles gold went to Varanasi’s Shivam Singh, who clocked 15.54 seconds. Other gold medal winners in different events, included Nishant, Ashish Pal, Anuj Bind, Pavan Yadav, Shreya, Anjum Chaudhary and Tanu Yadav.

SNOKKER TOURNEY

Almost one-sided encounters marked the Day One at the 7th edition of the North India Open Snooker Tournament, at the Green Baize here on Sunday. The event, which has many big names in the fray, witnessed a thrilling encounter between Rohit Gangwar and Fahad Ahmed, which latter won by 3-2 (32-50, 12-66, 92-88, 68-20, 66-33). In other matches of the day, Vishal Saini, Muneer, Rishab Shah, Dilshad and Aadil Malik scored convincing wins.

MEN’S TENNIS

As many as three from hosts Uttar Pradesh made it to the main draw of the AITA Men’s tournament, starting Monday, at the Unnad Tennis Academy here. Vansh Yadav defeated statemate Tanmay Sharma 6-2, 6-2 to make it to the main draw, before Saurabh Singh beating Rajasthan’s Abhiveer Shekhawat 6-3, 6-4, whereas Kamlesh Shukla defeated Ankur Chirimar of West Bengal 6-1, 6-1. Others, who qualified for the main draw, included Shivam Khanna, Pratush Mohanty, Fardeen, Tarun Randhawa and Anup Bangargi.
