Seven killed, 22 injured in separate road mishaps

KANPUR/VARANASI : Seven people lost their lives and 22 were seriously injured in three separate accidents in Kanpur, Ballia and Sonbhadra on Wednesday.

In Kanpur, three persons were killed and 20 were injured when a small loader carrying devotees overturned on Kanpur-Prayagraj highway on the outskirts of the city, said the police.

DCP, Kanpur east, Shravan Kumar Singh said the injured have been admitted to the LLR hospital in Kanpur.

“The driver was speeding the vehicle and lost control. The accident is a result of his recklessne­ss, and the police are filing a FIR against him,” he said.

He said the deceased are yet to be identified. The loader carried about 25 people and was on way to Bara Devi temple in Kanpur’s Juhi from Fatehpur.

Meanwhile in Ballia, three people, including a mother and daughter, died and two others were seriously injured when a jeep packed with devotees overturned near Mahadev Ka Dera of Brahmapur police station in Ballia, police said.

They said Motilal Verma, a resident of Bedua locality in Kotwali police station area of the city, along with his wife, daughter, granddaugh­ter and sister boarded a jeep at Biasi and was going to Maa Dumrejani Devi temple in Dumraon. The jeep overturned near Mahadev Ka Dera village of Brahmapur police station as the driver lost control.

Three persons, including Madhuri Devi (60), wife of Motilal Verma, a kin Dimpy Verma (15) died on the spot, whereas Verma’s daughter Reena Verma (30), and his elder sister Munna Devi (67) were seriously injured.

The locals rushed the injured to Ballia District Hospital where doctors declared Reena dead. Motilal Verma and his sister Munna Devi were under treatment at the hospital.

In Sonbhadra, a 46-year-old man died after a speedy jeep hit his bike on Babhni-Ambikapur road in Sonbhadra. The deceased was identified as Sunil Gupta (46), resident of Babhni village.

Two minors hospitalis­ed after group clash erupts in Kushinagar

Two minors were critically injured after a fatal attack from members of another group near the Kasya town of Kushinagar on Tuesday night, police said. The two were hospitalis­ed with their throat slit.

Girjesh Upadhyay, a police official in the town, said two groups clashed late at night over a Ramlila event in the Kumrota Sat Ghariya village.

The injured were identified as Sudhakar, 15, and Dileep, 16, residents of Sohar Patti village, who were referred to the BRD Medical College. Their condition was reported to be stable. The reason for the clash and the name of the attackers were not clear till Wednesday. Kushinagar district police were alert after the incident and conducted patrolling in the troubled villages.
