6 dead in Munich mall firing
MUNICH: At least six people were killed on Friday in a shooting rampage in a Munich shopping centre and the attacker or attackers are still at large, police said.
“Right now, we don’t know where the perpetrator or perpetrators are,” Munich police said, adding later in a tweet that “unfortunately, 6 people have been killed”.
Unconfirmed local media reports had earlier said the casualties could be as high as 15.
Munich police were using the term “suspected terrorism” in connection with the shooting, which may have been carried out by at least three gunmen according to eyewitnesses.
Munich police spokesman Thomas Baumann told German news agency dpa the attack started at a fast food restaurant shortly before 6 p.m. local time.
At the time of going to press at 1am, no suspect had been captured or killed and authorities did not confirm the number of victims.
The OEZ shopping centre was surrounded by armed police who were hunting for the attacker, while a helicopter flew overhead.
“There is a major police operation under way in the shopping centre,” Munich police said.
