Here is a lowdown on the sport not generally followed by the masses. THE BOW: The recurve bow is the only kind allowed in the Olympics. The bow comprises 1. two limbs, 2. a handle and 3. bow-string. It also has 4. sighting accessorie­s and 5. stabiliser rods. THE ARROW: An arrow is around 5.5mm in diameter. Arrows can leave the bow at over 240kmh. SCORING: An archer has 40 seconds to shoot each of their six arrows at a target. In the finals, an archer has 20 seconds to shoot each of their three arrows. TARGET: Consists of 10 concentric circles. It is 1.22m in diameter and positioned 1.3m above the ground. Archers have to shoot from 70m away. They aim for the innermost circle (yellow) of 12cm diameter which fetches 10 or 9 points. Arrows hitting the rings outside fetch fewer points depending on their distance from the centre.
