Manoj took up the sport because of his father Sher Singh, a former army boxer. Elder brother Rajesh could only reach inter-university level and later became a coach, and took Manoj under his wings. He won gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but failed to leave a mark at the London Olympics. He came back on the scene, securing Rio berth during the World qualifiers in June.
