CJI Thakur visits alma mater, takes trip down memory lane
JAMMU: Emotions and nostalgia ran high as Chief Justice of India TS Thakur took a visit down the memory lane with a visit to his childhood school — Government Central Basic Higher Secondary School at Purani Mandi, in the old city after five decades, on Saturday .
During his visit, CJI, who hails from Ramban district of Jammu region, was felicitated by the school staff. He also honoured five of his teachers — Inder Prakash Sharma, Mohan Lal Buli, Mohammed Sharief and Baru.
The CJI was seen mingling with his childhood school mates and sharing memories of the old days. Speaking to HT, one of close friends of the CJI YV Sharma informed that their batch, including the Chief Justice, passed Class 10 from the school in 1966. “At that time it was called Government Basic School. Thereafter, he did his law from Jammu University and became an outstanding lawyer. He had always been a good orator. Today, he turned a bit emotional to see his old friends and teachers,” said Sharma.
The CJI, however, expressed regrets over the poor condition of the school. “In Kashmir, schools have been burnt but in Jammu, it looks they have been neglected,” said Sharma, quoting CJI. Later, while addressing the audience, Thakur said he learnt English language in the school. He also recalled one of his teachers, Govind Sharma, who used to give him ` 1 as a reward for making speeches in the morning school assembly. Even after 50 long years, the Chief Justice surprised his friends and school teachers with minor details.
