Sachin Kundu was elected as president of the Haryana Youth Congress on Sunday.

Kundu, who belongs to Panipat, won the election by a hefty margin of over 10,000 votes. A supporter of Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, Kundu polled 25,086 votes, whereas his nearest rival Chiranjeev Rao, son of former minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, got 15,010 votes.

Rao, who is a former president of Haryana Youth Congress, will be senior vice-president of Youth Congress in the state. Of the remaining five contestants, three will get the positions of vice-president. Kundu, who was Panipat district president of NSUI earlier, gave credit for his victory to youth of the party.

“The elections are over now. We will all work together and fight the Khattar government for the rights and welfare of the youth of the state,” he said.

The elections for the posts of president, vice-president and general secretary of Youth Congress at state, district and assembly levels were hotly contested, playing out the bitter camp rivalries between the two main factions in the party led by Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The Hooda camp, whose strategy was devised by Deepender, managed to get a clear upper hand with its candidates cornering a significant number of positions in district and assembly units. Of the 1.41 lakh members of the state unit, 56,000 had cast their votes.
