At 86, when most people would choose to retire into a quiet lifestyle, Prem Maseeh Pardesi proves that there is no age bar for learning. The octogenarian from Shimla appeared for his graduation exams this year and has plans to go for a masters degree too!

Pardesi, who retired from Government of India press as the head clerk in 1989, says he always wanted to complete his studies but never got an opportunity to do so as he took up a job right after high school.

Then someone told him about the open learning courses at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Pardesi opted for political science, public administration and Urdu.

Speaking to HT, he said he chose Urdu as the other two subjects were in English.

Pardesi says he has been living in Shimla since 1951, after his family moved here from Ropar in Punjab. “I have spent around 37 years in government service. My son lives in New Delhi and my daughters are married. My wife and I live here alone,” the 86-year-old added.

He says his wife was not too keen on him pursuing studies as she wanted him to lead a peaceful life. “But her words inspire me to study more,” he said.

IGNOU coordinator Gopal Chauhan said that Pardesi will complete his graduation this year.

“He is so passionate about his graduation and studies that he is an inspiration for the others. Many don’t feel comfortable attending classes at a later age ,” he added. Chauhan added that he attends all the classes regularly. “Pardesi completed his assignments in time.Today he appeared in the Urdu exam,” he added.Pardesi lives in Totu in Shimla town and leads follows a strict daily routine.
