LS MAY DEBATE NOTE BAN TODAY

NEW DELHI: After days of disruption, Lok Sabha could debate demonetisation on Monday as Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has admitted a motion under a rule which does not entail voting.

The December 5 business list includes a discussion on the issue under Rule 193 on notices given by lawmakers Bhartruhari Mahtab of BJD and A P Jithender Reddy of TRS.

The discussion, if it goes through, could break the logjam in Parliament which has seen little business transacted since it began for winter on November 16, owing to the stand-off between the government and the opposition.

At least 20 MPs—mostly from the ruling NDA—had given notices under Rule 193 seeking debate on the note ban.

While opposition MPs had wanted to move an adjournment motion, the government pressed for debate under a rule which does not entail voting and does not involve bringing a formal motion.
