BAN ON ARMS IN PUNJAB BUT NO POLICING

- Shailee Dogra shailee.dogra@hindustantimes.com

The ban on carrying firearms to marriage places, which has been in force in Punjab since 2010, is violated due to lack of implementation by the police and no reporting of firing during weddings. Deputy commissioners have been issuing prohibitory orders on carrying weapons to marriage places under Section 144 of the CrPC every three months, but there is utter lack of implementation.

DS Mangat, SAS Nagar DC , said the implementation rests with the police. Most often, the ban takes the form of a token paper notice outside marriage palaces. “It is only in case of untoward incidents that celebratory firing becomes a talking point. The police should take action against marriage palace owners who allow weapons inside their premises if they want the public to report such incidents,” said a senior official . Owner of a banquet hall in Balongi, SAS Nagar, rued that though they make the no-weapon policy clear in their booking forms, they have no authority to check people with weapons from entering their premises .
