CHENNAI: Despite a ban by Supreme Court on Jallikattu, the traditional sport was played in some parts of Tamil Nadu as part of Pongal celebrations. At least four places in Madurai district organised demonstrations supporting the ritual on Saturday. A significant number of police personnel had been deployed across the state to ensure protests remained peaceful even as police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse a crowd in Avaniyapuram, one of the places which traditionally holds the bull-taming sport. Nonetheless, they were unable to deter Jallikattu supporters from going ahead.
