The main accused in the murder of Akali leader Gurbachan Singh of Ferochechi village in the district, Col Surjit Singh (retd), surrendered before the Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police Bhupinderjit Singh Virk at his office here on Friday.

Col Surjit Singh and his advocate son Sumit Singh had been absconding since March 13 after allegedly killing Gurdaspur district’s Shiromani Akali Dal senior vice-president Gurbachan Singh over political rivalry.

Col Singh is accused of killing the Akali leader with his licensed pistol. Sumit is yet to be arrested.

SSP Virk said police had reliable information about the whereabouts of Sumit and he will be nabbed soon.

The father-son duo’s accomplice Sajjan Singh of Ferochechi was arrested the day (March 13) the crime was committed.

Col Singh currently owes allegiance to the Congress party though he had been associated with the Akali Dal and had contested the assembly election in 2012 from Qadian as a Punjab People's Party candidate.

At Gurbachan's 'bhog’ on March 22, Akali leadership, including former ministers Bikram Singh Majithia and Sewa Singh Sekhwan, had announced to hold a 'dharna' outside deputy commissioner's office on March 27 if the accused were not arrested by then.
