-

A 26-year-old woman made an unsuccessful bid to kill her five-year-old son by stabbing him in the neck and abdomen before she hanged herself at her house in Sujawalpur village near here on Sunday late night.

The son, Lovepreet Singh, has sustained serious injuries and has been referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh, by the doctors of civil hospital, here. After injuring her son, Manpreet Kaur committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan in another room of the house.

As per the information, Manpreet’s husband Jaspal Singh, a labourer, was not at home when the incident took place. “When I knocked at the door, nobody responded. I scaled the wall and found Manpreet hanging from a fan, while Lovepreet crying in pain and bleeding profusely,” Jaspal said.

Later, Jaspal and other villagers took Lovepreet to civil hospital for treatment from where doctors have referred him to the PGI. A police team from Sadar police station rushed to the spot after being contacted by the village sarpanch. The police have also recovered a suicide note from the spot and a kitchen knife used to stab Lovepreet.

“I am killing my son because his life will be ruined after my death. Nobody is responsible for the incident,” read the suicide note written in Punjabi.

Villagers said the family has been under duress due to poverty and fights between the couple were routine. SBS Nagar SSP Naveen Singla said the child is critical.
