Malinga hattrick in vain as Lanka lose

-

Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 45 runs in their second Twenty20 to fittingly draw the series 1-1 on Thursday. The Test and One-Day International series were also drawn.

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and elected to bat in his final T20.

His batsmen scored 176-9, a bigger score slashed by a late hattrick by fast bowler Lasith Malinga.

Sri Lanka was then bowled out for 131 with two overs to spare. Chamara Kapugedara led with 50 but, for Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman took 4-21 and Shakib al Hasan 3-24.

Earlier, Malinga became only the fifth bowler in the history of T20 Internationals to claim a hat-trick.

He bowled Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza and trapped Mehedi Hasan lbw in his final over to finish with 3-34.

His feat, the second Sri Lankan to achieve the mark after team-mate Thisara Perera, spoiled a good start by Bangladesh, who were bidding for a perfect send-off to their captain Mashrafe who is retiring after the series.

Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar added 70 runs in a record opening partnership to give the visiting side a solid start at the. Premadasa Stadium.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 176/9 in 20 ovs (Shakib Al Hasan 38, Imrul Kayes 36, Lasith Malinga 3/34) bt Sri Lanka 131 all out in 18 ovs (Chamara Kapugedera 50, Mustafizur Rahman 4/21, Shakib Al Hasan 3/24) by 45 runs.
