ROHTAK : A 22-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on a busy street in Jind’s Jhanjh Gate area on Thursday night.

The incident was caught on camera where the two assailants are seen dragging the victim to the middle of a road and then taking turns at firing at him in the leg and chest, while bystanders watched the horror silently.

Police said the deceased was identified as Lucky, a resident of Badi Basti on Bhiwani Road in the district. He was eating golgappas from a street vendor when the two assailants came on a motorcycle and fired four shots at him, killing him on the spot.

They fled waving the pistol in the air before the police could reach. The police sent the body for post-mortem to the Civil Hospital, where the family refused to accept it till Friday afternoon, demanding the arrest of the accused. They were pacified on the SP’s assurance.

Jind city station house officer inspector Nar Singh said an old enmity between Lucky and a rival gang could have led to the shooting.

“Lucky had five cases of attempt to murder, rioting and under the Arms Act against him. Based on his family’s complaint, we have registered a case of murder against eight people, including Sombir, Rakesh, Ashish and Soma. Though we have the CCTV footage, the faces of the assailants are not clearly visible,” he said.

Jind SP Shashank Anand said they have arrested one accused Soma and have constituted five teams to arrest the remaining men. “We have also given security to the family of the victim. Besides, we are considering opening a police post near the incident spot to monitor the city better,” he said.
