AKALI LEADER’S KIN SHOT DEAD IN FEROZEPUR
The father and a brother of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader were shot dead while he suffered injuries when a family feud over the post of sarpanch in Rukanshah Wala village near Ferozepur turned bloody on Tuesday morning. Police identified four of the accused and registered the case against 10 persons in all.
Police said Balwinder Singh, a member of the village panchayat and vice-president of the SAD’s Ferozepur unit, had a dispute with his relative Sukhjinder Singh, who is with the Congress, for the past three years.
Early Tuesday morning, Sukhjinder came with three others to Balwinder’s residence to discuss the issue regarding the post of sarpanch. After heated talks for over an hour, around 8am Sukhjinder and his accomplices allegedly fired at Balwinder and others sitting there with their licensed guns. Balwinder’s father Harnam Singh, 80, and brother Joginder Singh, 45, died.
Akali MLA Joginder Singh Jindu said, “Sukhjinder was bent upon grabbing the post of sarpanch. Two days ago, Sukhjinder forcibly got signatures of the village sarpanch on blank papers. The matter was reported to the police too, but nothing concrete was done.”He said they won’t cremate the bodies until justice was done and the negligent officials were booked too. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gaurav Garg said a case was being registered at Kulgari police station.
