Punjab, Haryana,UT cops to join hands to take on gangsters

A MEETING OF SP LEVEL OFFICERS WILL BE HELD ONCE IN A MONTH AND SENIOR OFFICERS OF BOTH STATES AND THE UT WILL MEET AFTER COUPLE OF MONTHS TO CHECK PROGRESS

In order to curb activities of gangsters in the region, police forces in Punjab, Haryana and union territory of Chandigarh have decided to regularly share intelligen­ce among themselves.

Police officers from the two states and the UT have decided to meet every fortnight in this regard. The decision was taken in a meeting of senior police officers from the two states and the UT, sources said. Several dreaded gangsters, who are active in Punjab, after committing crime hide in Haryana.

A meeting of SP level officers will be held once in a month and senior officers of both states and the UT will meet after every couple of months to check the progress, sources said.

The meeting was attended by ADGP (law & order) Rohit Chaudhary, IG Patiala zone AS Rai, IG Nilabh Kishore, IG LK Yadav, all from Punjab, Chandigarh DIG Alok Kumar and Panchkula deputy commission­er of police (DCP) Ashok Kumar. The meeting was held in the view of rise in shooting incidents by gangsters.

Last month, three gangsters were shot dead by the members of a rival gang led by Vicky Goundar, who had escaped from Nabha Jail in Gurdaspur last year. In ₹1.33 crore robbery on Banur-Chandigarh highway from a bank’s cash van this month, police even suspected the role of gangsters. In Panchkula on May 8, a 32-year-old bouncer was shot dead by unidentifi­ed men in broad daylight.
