2 mishaps snuff out 10 lives in Punjab

Seven die after SUV hits threewheel­er, car in Beas; three killed in collision between PRTC bus and truck at Bathinda village

Ten people were killed and 27 others injured in two accidents in Amritsar and Bathinda districts on Sunday. While seven people lost their lives when a speeding SUV hit a three-wheeler and a car at Beas, three died in a head-on collision between a PRTC bus and a mini-truck at Jethu Ke village on the Rampura Phul-Barnala road.

Ten people were killed and 27 others injured in two accidents in Amritsar and Bathinda districts on Sunday. While seven people lost their lives when a speeding SUV hit a three-wheeler and a car at Beas, three died in a head-on collision between a PRTC bus and a minitruck at Jethu Ke village on the Rampura Phul-Barnala road.

The first mishap took place outside an eatery at Umranangal Chowk, 40km from Amritsar, when a speeding Mahindra Scorpio (DL-4C-NB-7904) hit a stationary auto-rickshaw (PB-07AS-8132) and a Tata Indica (HP-39-B-3340) around 6am. Sixteen people, all from Hoshiarpur district, were on their way to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. Eyewitness­es say the SUV driver lost control over the vehicle while trying to avoid a collision with a loaded tipper which took a U-turn at the intersecti­on.

While five people — Kamaljit Kaur, 35, Sewa Singh, 70, of Nasrala village, Sarabjit Kaur, 45, of Hoshiarpur and Avtar Singh, 55, of Nangal Saroa village and Komalpreet Kaur, 25, died on the spot — Sewa Singh’s wife Harminder Kaur, 65, and Jasbir Singh, 35, succumbed to injuries in a hospital, said Amandeep Singh, station house officer (SHO), Beas police station.

The injured were rushed to the Baba Bakala civil hospital from where they were refereed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. The injured also included three children — oneand-half-year-old Jagjit Singh, four-year-old Babalpreet Kaur and six-year-old Jaspreet Singh.

Occupants of the SUV, driver Joginder Singh and Nihal Singh, both from Delhi, also sustained injuries. They were later discharged from the civil hospital. A case has been registered against them.

In another accident, three people died and 18 others injured in a head-on collision between a Ludhiana-bound PRTC bus (PB-10-FF 2881) and a canter (PB-03-BT-2373) at Jethu Ke village near Rampura Phul around 6.30am. The deceased have been identified as Kaushlya Devi of Haibowal in Ludhiana, bus driver Malkit Singh also of Ludhiana and canter driver Jagsir Singh, a resident of Malkana village in Bathinda.

The injured were rushed to government and private hospitals. The condition of Harpal Kaur, who is admitted to a private hospital, is stated to be serious. Station house officer, Rampura Sadar police station, Balwinder Singh said only one side of the road had been opened for the traffic due to the ongoing four-laning work on the Bathinda-Chandigarh road. A case under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC has been registered.
