ROHTAK: A woman attempted suicide by consuming poison outside the office of superintendent of police in Sonepat, alleging police inaction into the case pertaining to the suicide of her sonin-law, in which they had named BJP MLA from Assandh Bakhshish Singh Virk as an accused for abetment.

Thirty three-year-old Subhash Singh, an inspector with Haryana Agro department in Karnal, had committed suicide on May 21 by consuming poison in Sonepat.

The deceased’s family had lodged a complaint against 10 people, including chief parliamentary secretary and BJP MLA Bakhshish Singh Virk and his son, for harassment.

The family had alleged that Subhash’s co-workers, junior to him, had been pressurising him to work according to them on the behest of the MLA. They had also allegedly framed Subhash in corruption charges.

Based on their complaint, the police had booked seven co-workers of Subhash for abetment to suicide. However, the police did not register a case against MLA Virk or his son.

Upset over the police inaction, Subhash’s family members on Friday sat on dharna outside the SP office at mini-secretariat, where his mother-in-law Beermati Devi consumed poison. The family said she was upset over the plight of her daughter. She was rushed to a private hospital, where her condition was said to be out of danger.

Sonepat DSP Mukesh Jakhar, who is in-charge of the special investigation team (SIT) formed to probe the case, said they were on a lookout for the named accused and will make arrests soon.

“The role of the BJP MLA will be ascertained after the other accused are arrested,” he said. He refused to comment on the suicide attempt by the woman over police inaction.
