Post clashes, Dalit family holds marriage function amid tight security

After days of tension following caste clashes, the residents of Shabbirpur village in Saharanpur district had a reason to celebrate as a Dalit family solemnised the marriage of two women on Friday.

Though Dharampal and Faqirchand, grandfather and father of the brides, were concerned about the safety of the ‘baraatis’, the function passed off peacefully.

The police deployed in the Shabbirpur village in the aftermath of the May 5 violence kept a close vigil in the area to ensure no untoward incident took place.

In their bid to revive lost trust between Dalits and Rajputs, a few Thakurs, including ex Pradhan of Shabbirpur Om Singh, joined in the celebrations.
