Myths about cow

After former HC judge MAhesh ChAndrA ShArmA listed out the heAlth Benefits of Cow urine, HT spoke to Dr Suresh GokhAle, AnimAl genetiCist, Pune, ABout the ClAims.

Myth: Cow is the only living being which intakes oxygen and emits oxygen. The Cow inhAles oxygen And exhAles more CArBon dioxide.

Myth:Cow urine keeps the liver, heart and mind healthy, and increases the immunity of the body. ChArAk SAmhitA (AurvedA referenCe mediCine Book) refers to suCh utility. But there hAve Been limited experiment­s in AgriCultur­e regArding utility of Cow urine As growth promoter.

Myth:The cow, through its horns, absorbs ‘cosmic’ energy.

Myth: Consumptio­n of cow milk prevents cancer from entering the blood cells. There’s A question on whether they Are supported By AppropriAt­e CliniCAl triAl And the results Confirmed.

Myth: Cow dung can generate 4,500 litres of biogas every year. The generAl figures CAlCulAted seem Be BAsed on stAll fed AnimAls. The AvAilABili­ty of dung from grAzing AnimAls (or those mAintAined under extensive feeding system) will Be muCh less Consequent­ly yielding less gAs.

Myth: Cow is the only mammal whose intestine is 180 feet long because of which its milk has carotene which produces vitamin A in humans. GenerAlly, herBivorou­s AnimAls hAve longer digestive trACt. Although Cow’s milk ContAins CArotene (preCursor of vitAmin A) And thAt of BuffAlo vitAmin A, physiologi­CAlly, it does not mAke differenCe.
