KARNAL: The newly constructed Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College has received the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) approval for 100 MBBS seats.

The permission has been given for a period of one year and it will be renewed on a yearly basis till the first batch passes out.

The first academic session will start in August this year.

The news has brought cheer for medical students across the region.

“A medical college in Karnal was a long pending demand of students in the district as earlier they had to go to Rohtak and other cities to study. Now, they can study in their home town itself,” says Ankit Vashist, an MBBS aspirant.

Talking to Hindustan Times, KCGMC director Dr Surender Kashyap said, “We are very happy that the government of India has given us permission to start admissions from this academic year. I hope the medical college will help to improve medical services in the state and the growing demand of medical professionals.”

Set up on Bhagwan Parsuram Road, the 350-bed hospital was inaugurated by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on April 13.

As per state government officials, it will be upgraded to a 700bedded hospital and it will also have 55 senior and 40 junior doctors, besides paramedical staff.

With the nod for 100 seats in Kalpana Chawla Medical College, the number of MBBS seats in Haryana has gone up to 1,050.

As many as 15 per cent seats of MBBS of Kalpana Chawla Medical College will be reserved for the Union government.
