KAPURTHALA : Appreciating the efforts of Gurbachan Singh, 51, a Kapurthala-based head constable, for saving the environment, posted at Police Line, the Punjab Police promoted him to assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on Wednesday.

Arpit Shukla, inspector general of police (IGP) promoted him. Hindustan Times highlighted Singh’s efforts of promoting green mission on June 4.

Whenever Gurbachan sees an advertisement of ‘Shok Samachar’ (obituary) in newspapers, he writes a letter to the grieving family, requesting them to plant a sapling in memory of the deceased person.

In past 11 years, Gurbachan has sent around 23,000 letters to families in state. Not only this, he has himself planted over 150 plants every year in memory of the deceased people, on behalf of the relatives and family members.

“IGP Arpit Shukla personally called me on Tuesday and invited me for tea. It was a surprise event for me and I am glad to be promoted as ASI,” Gurbachan said thanking director general of police (DGP) Suresh Arora and IGP Shukla for the promotion.

Telling the success of his drive, Singh says that he first sent a letter to a doctor in SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), who lost his daughter in 2005. “He responded to the letter a year later and said that he planted 300 samplings,” said Gurbachan.

“My grandfather planted a seed in February 1991, two months later, he died. But when the seed grew into a tree, I felt the presence of my grandfather. That motivated me to plant trees in memory of our beloved ones,” he said.
