At Kapurthala cop’s houses: 4-kg heroin, AK-47, ₹16 lakh cash

The special task force (STF) of Punjab Police on Friday arrested a CIA inspector for his alleged links to peddlers and seized a large quantity of drugs, arms and ammunition from his official quarters.

Inspector Inderjit Singh, posted as in-charge of crime investigat­ing agency (CIA) wing in Kapurthala, was famous as “drug recovery specialist”.

Police recovered 3 kg of smack and 4 kg of heroin from his Phagwara quarters. A 9 mm Italianmak­e pistol, a .38 bore revolver, an AK 47 and around 380 live cartridges of different arms, including 115 AK 47 cartridges, were found at his house at Jalandhar Police Lines.

₹16.50 lakh cash, 3,550 British pounds and a car were also seized there. A case under various sections of the IPC, NDPS Act and Arms Act was registered against Inderjit.

After coming to power in March this year, the Congress government had constitute­d an STF headed by ADGP Harpeet Singh Sidhu to curb the drug menace in the state.

Sidhu told reporters in Chandigarh. “We analysed 13 cases of recovery by him when he was posted as CIA in-charge in Taran Taran for 14 months. revealed that despite huge recovery —19 kg heroin in one case —all accused were freed by court,” said Sidhu.

“In June first week, these cases were referred to IG border zone and Tarn Taran SSP. It came to light that Inderjit made recoveries of narcotics but the motive was to obtain illegal gratificat­ion from those in his custody on the promise of helping them to walk free. After reports recommende­d action against the accused, we conducted raids and arrested him,“he added.
