A 56-year-old man was shot dead in a mosque in Sonepat’s Rasoi village on Saturday when he was offering his evening prayers.

The deceased has been identified as Shabbir Ahmed, who worked as a daily wager.

As per the police, Ahmed had been living in the mosque for the last few days to offer prayers as it is the month of Ramzan.

A CCTV footage of a part of the incident has emerged which shows a masked assailant entering the mosque and running away after shooting at Ahmed.

Police said the bullet hit Ahmed in his head, and he died on the spot.

An FIR under Section 302 (murder) has been registered against an unidentified person at Kundli police station on the complaint of Ahmed’s son.

Police said they have not been able to ascertain the reason behind the murder, though maintained that they will get more clues by Monday.

“We couldn’t access the full CCTV footage from the mosque and the bank nearby due to it being a Sunday. We are expecting to get more footage by Monday and it will help us in solving the case,” investigation officer Devender Singh said.

The family of the deceased said he had no enmity of any kind with anyone.

“We are probing the incident. As of now, we can’t say if Ahmed was the real target or if it was a case of mistaken identity. We will find out more only after the accused is arrested,” the officer said.
