FIGHT TOOK PLACE AS A CAR ‘TOUCHED’ WOMEN DANCING IN WEDDING PROCESSION; GROOM SOUGHT TO RESOLVE ISSUE, GOT THRASHED

A bridegroom, who was on his way to the bride’s house to solemnise marriage, landed in hospital after a group of men thrashed him when their car hit some women dancing on the road at Model Town late Monday.

The incident took place when the marriage procession was going from Ambedkar Nagar to Dhakka Colony. A Maruti Alto car hit some women who were dancing in the middle of the road.

A scuffle ensued between the bridegroom’s relatives and friends and the four youths sitting in the car.

The groom, Chand Kumar of Ambedkar Nagar, came down from the horse and tried to sort out the matter. The youths thrashed him and also snatched the ceremonial sword he was carrying. Then they fled from the spot.

The scuffle was captured in a CCTV camera installed at a petrol pump. Police said those part of the marriage procession were drunk. “The car barely touched the women and no one was grievously hurt,” said Surinder Chopra, Model Town station house officer (SHO).

“The police were called to the spot and the groom was taken to hospital. After receiving treatment, the bridegroom went to solemnize his marriage,” he said.

The police have identified the Maruti Alto car with the help of CCTV footage.

The SHO said the youths came to the Model Town police station later.

“As the matter is not very serious in nature, a compromise will be reached between the two parties,” he said.

A case has been registered under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) but no one has been arrested so far, he informed.
