In an attempt to raise awareness among the twowheeler riders who travel without a helmet , the traffic police in Sirsa have come up with an innovative idea to not provide fuel to those riding without the protective gear.

The police department has issued letters to the petrol pump owners in Sirsa asking them not to let anybody caught without the helmet to refill their two-wheelers with fuel. The police have also ordered installation of hoardings and billboards at various points in the city to create awareness among the riders.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, station house officer (SHO) traffic Anil Kumar Sodhi, said, “The most important part of riding a twowheeler is fuel. Without fuel one can go nowhere. We are only trying to save lives as helmet plays an important role.”

“Several people lose their lives as they do not follow traffic rules. Helmet is most important for two-wheelers. I have personally seen that youths do not wear helmet here in Sirsa. We are also going to launch a special drive and will challan those who violate them,” Sodhi added.

According to the data provided by the Sirsa traffic police, 450 lives were lost and about 1,000 people suffered serious injuries in road accidents in the district since 2014.

It added that most of the fatalities occurred as riders were not wearing helmets.

SSP Satender Gupta said, “We have started checking school vehicles under special task that started from July 1 to July 15. Police will challan and even impound those vehicles which are not following proper traffic guidelines.”

Under the special checking, the traffic police on Monday challaned 20 school vehicles and impounded three. “We have found that most of the school vehicles are not following guidelines and are running on the road without proper documents. The special checking will continue,” added SHO Anil Kumar Sodhi.
