Traders relieved as J&K House passes GST in special session
The Chamber of Traders Federation, an umbrella organisation of trading community in Jammu and Kashmir, expressed gratitude towards the state government as J&K legislative assembly adopted the Goods and Services Tax (GST) resolution on Wednesday.
“Much to the relief of traders and industrialists the state legislature has adopted GST resolution and paved the way for its implementation after the governor’s approval. The trading community appreciates the government for adopting the resolution,” president of the traders federation Neeraj Anand said.
The state assembly passed the pan-India tax regime during a special session, after two days of heated exchanges and fiery debates between BJP and Opposition.
The opposition parties, especially National Conference (NC), had been stiffly opposing the GST on the flimsy grounds that it may erode fiscal autonomy of the state.
Earlier, traders in the capital city said that stocks of essential commodities across the region may last for a day or two. “Neither the products were coming to the state nor the traders and industrialists were sending exports, which had added to chaos and confusion,” said Sandeep Gupta, a city-based wholesale grocery trader.
The deputy commissioner of commercial taxes department Puneet Sharma had said on Monday that on an average, over 2,000 trucks used to enter the state via Lakhanpur toll plaza in 24 hours but the number is less than 400 now.
