KARNAL: Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has accused the BJP government at the Centre of looting hard-earned money of traders in the name of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Hooda, who was addressing traders during a ‘Vyopari Sammelan’ in Karnal, said the government has imposed highest rates in the world under the GST and the new tax will affect small traders and farmers badly.

“We are not opposing GST but we are against the way it is being implemented. We have raised 12 shortcomings in the law and these should be removed”, he said, adding that the government claiming ‘one nation one tax under GST but imposed higher taxes on daily use products and agriculture implements.

He asked the government to make amendments in the GST in coming monsoon session of the parliament, otherwise a traders’ Mahapanchayat will be called to start agitation against the government”. He demanded that petrol and diesel should also be brought under GST to provide relief to farmers and traders. He said traders should be allowed to file only three income tax returns in a year against the present 37. He said the provision of jail under this law is condemnable and the law should be abolished.
