India colts thrash England by 334 runs

-

NEWDELHI: The U-19 team of India rode a century from Manjot Kalra (122) and right-arm pacer Kamlesh Nagarkoti’s 10-wicket haul to beat England U-19 by 334 runs in the first four-day ‘Test’ at Chesterfield on Wednesday. Fifties in both innings from Prithvi Shaw (86 & 69) and Riyan Das (68 & 50) and a stellar first-innings 89 by Harvik Desai meant England found themselves dumped under a pile of runs that they couldn’t wriggle out of.

Asked to bat, India made full use of the fresh pitch to grind England’s bowlers and score 519. In reply, England folded for 195.

Sensing victory after taking a 324-run lead, India raised 173 runs for the loss of six wickets in 32 overs before declaring. England simply wilted under the pressure.

The next and final Test at Worcester begins Monday. After that, India U-19 will play a fivematch one-day series against England U-19.

Brief scores: India U-19 519 all out in 133.4 overs (M Kalra 122, P Shaw 86, R Das 68, H Desai 89, S Mavi 41*) & 173/6d in 32 overs (P Shaw 69, R Das 50). England U-19 195 all out in 54.2 overs (Will Jacks 46, K Nagarkoti 5/49, S Mavi 4/51) & 163 all out in 46.1 overs (M Holden 60, K Nagarkoti 5/63). Result: India U-19 won by 334 runs.
