Historic seventh gold for Dressel
BUDAPEST: Caeleb Dressel won an historic seventh gold medal in Budapest on Sunday as the USA claimed the men’s 4x100m medley relay title at the world championships.
After Dressel swam the third leg, Nathan Adrian touched the wall first for the USA at three minutes, 27.91 seconds with Great Britain taking silver at 1.04 while Russia earned bronze at 1.45. The 20-year-old Dressel has now matched US swim legend Michael Phelps’ record of seven gold medals from a single worlds set at the 2007 championships in Melbourne.
HOSSZU’S FEAT
Hungary’s ‘Iron Lady’ Katinka Hosszu admitted feeling the strain after retaining the women’s 400m individual medley title at the world championships on Sunday to complete the IM double on home soil in Budapest.
Hosszu clocked a new championships record time of four minutes, 29.33 seconds. This is the third straight world championships where Hosszu has won both the 200m and 400m IM title and she is also the world-record holder in both events.
SJOSTROM, KING SHINE
Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden won the women’s 50m freestyle gold at the world championships on Sunday for her third sprint title in Budapest.
Lilly King of the United States claimed her second world record this week in winning the women’s 50m breaststroke gold.
King clocked 29.40 seconds, breaking Ruta Meilutyte’s fouryear-old record of 29.48.
