AMRITSAR: It was the festival of Raksha Bandhan that celebrates the brother-sister bond, and Sushma went to her brother’s house as usual to tie the rakhi on his wrist. Only to find the bodies of her brother, Subhash Chander (62), and his wife Kamlesh Rani (60), in Islamabad locality of Amritsar on Monday morning.

Police believe the elderly couple was murdered with sharpedged weapons by purported robbers on Sunday.

However, there was no sign of forcible entry, which hints that the couple knew the robbers or they tricked them into allowing them inside.

Subhash was a retired teacher while his wife was a homemaker, and the couple lived alone as their children were abroad, said the police.

Teams led by police commissioner SS Srivastava reached the spot and found the cupboards broken, birthing the robbery theory.

“It seems that two or three persons entered the house to execute a robbery and later killed the couple.

There is no sign of forcible entry.

It seems the suspects panicked as the couple may have identified them,” said the commissioner.

“But we can’t take any exact line at this point. Forensic teams were called in to examine the crime scene.”

CCTV camera footage from nearby places is also being scanned.

“We have some clues but those can’t be shared at this moment,” he stressed.
