Timothy Leverton, president and chief technical officer of Tata Motors Ltd, has resigned and will return to the UK, the company said.

Leverton, who was working out of the Tata Motors Engineering Research Centre in Pune, resigned citing personal reasons, the company said in the statement on Monday.

He joined the Tata Group flagship when the company’s passenger vehicle business, in the absence of new models, had ceded ground to rival car makers. Over the last seven years-- Liverton has been spearheading the transition at company’s passenger car portfolio. First through introduction of Zest sedan and Bolt hatchback which helped Tata Motors get back in reckoning, and then through new age contemporary models like Tiago hatchback, Tigor compact sedan and Hexa SUV, which have helped the Mumbai-based company expand its market share.

He was also preparing Tata Motors for stricter regulations, including Bharat Stage VI which kicks in from 2020 and disruptive technologies such as autonomous driving, electric vehicles and connected cars, some of which will become a reality in the next decade.

“It has been wonderful working with Tim during my tenure and it is indeed a loss that he has decided to leave and move back to the UK for personal reasons. Tim has actively led the research and development initiatives of Tata Motors and we thank him for his invaluable contribution. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” said Guenter Butschek, chief executive and managing director, Tata Motors said in the statement. Leverton will continue in his position till 31 October. A successor to Leverton will be announced in due course, the company said.
