IPR awareness workshop at DU
NEWDELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) is organising an awareness workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Intellectual Property India, a government initiative under the department of industrial policy and promotion, ministry of commerce, government of India.
The workshop is open to students, faculty members, researchers and anyone with an interest in IPR protection. Scheduled to be held on 15 September, participants can attend the workshop free of cost.
IPR awareness is one of the key features of the National Intellectual Property Rights Policy that was approved by the Union cabinet in 2016. Explaining the rationale of organising such a workshop, Rekha Chaturvedi, IPR chair, DU says, “IPR is a broad area that includes but is not limited to industry designs, trade secrets, plant variety protection and it is essential to help students and faculty broaden the understanding of what constitutes IPR.”
“Universities are a hub of IPR generation and if we don’t educate about IPR-related laws and mechanisms, there is a possibility that the creator of a new idea or technology may not get due credit,” adds Chaturvedi. “The number of low patents in the country can be attributed to possible lack of awareness of threepoint IPR principle of generate, protect and commercialise.” To be held at Cluster Innovation Centre, workshop is among a series of awareness generation mechanisms that are particularly being implemented at higher education institutes across country.
“It is important to introduce students about IPR as copyright and plagiarism are also key concepts and students who have just entered college must understand importance of attributing ideas to the original source,” concludes Chaturvedi.
