Officials said that acting on joint intelligence from the BSF and NCB, troops of the two forces laid special ambushes in the area under border outpost of Shahpur. Around 2am, troops noticed suspicious movement of near the border. “When Pakistani miscreants approached the border fence with the intention of smuggling and infiltration, our troops warned them to stop. At this, covering fire for them started from the Pakistan side on BSF troops, who retaliated in self-defence,” said RS Kataria, BSF DIG. “Resultantly two Pakistanbased infiltrators were killed,” he added. The bodies were later found in Indian territory.
Officials said the cross-firing occurred for six minutes at night. Said IG Goel, “A flag meeting was held immediately after the bodies were recovered. Pakistani officials refused to claim the bodies. They said the militants were not from Pakistan.”
