UNITEDNATIONS: The BRICS countries strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and demanded a comprehensive reform of the United Nations to allow India and other members of the grouping to play an important role in the world body. The foreign ministers of BRICS “reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism” and called for “concerted efforts to counter terrorism on a firm international legal basis,” said a joint statement issued after a meeting on the margins of the UNGA on Thursday.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to the “expeditious adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism” at the UN and stressed the role of the BRICS CounterTerrorism Working Group in counter-terror efforts.
“The horror of terrorism continues to haunt global peace and security,” external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said at a BRICS meeting, held weeks after a summit of the member nations in China took a strong stand on terrorism. “They continue to find support and shelter in countries which use terrorism as an instrument of State Policy,” she said, in a thinly veiled reference to Pakistan. The ministers also called for a comprehensive reform of the UN, including the Security Council. Russia and China, two permanent members of the Security Council, backed the aspirations of India, Brazil and South Africa to play a greater role in the UN.
They expressed concern over conflicts in several regions that undermine security, provide fertile grounds for terror activities and cause refugee and migration waves. They also supported political and diplomatic solutions of the situations, such as the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, and in Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan.
