WHY NOT JAGIR KAUR TOO? JATHEDAR SAYS WILL DISCUSS ‘OLD MATTER’ OF HER CONVICTION
Reacting to AAP MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira’s complaint against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Jagir Kaur, a former president and now member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Friday said the Sikh clergy would “thoroughly discuss” the matter, as to whether she deserves to be excommunicated for being a convict on charges of forcing abortion on her daughter, who was murdered later.
Khaira, who has fought multiple elections against Kaur from Bholath, had raised the issue in light of the Akal Takht excommunicating rape accused former Akali minister Sucha Singh Langah.
Now leader of opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Khaira wrote an open letter underlining that Kaur was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment by a special CBI court of Patiala in 2012 specifically for the forcible abortion of her daughter Harpreet Kaur’s foetus. Harpreet was murdered later.
Replying to a query related to the letter, the jathedar also appeared to defend her: “The case is very old and the complainant himself states in the complaint that Bibi Jagir Kaur has been acquitted by the court in the murder case.”
Meanwhile, the radical groups’ “parallel jathedars” had summoned Kaur on November 7, but she has reportedly refused to appear.
Asked about a complaint against another SAD leader, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh GK, regarding alleged use of objectionable words against Guru Gobind Singh, the jathedar said, “The voice in the phone talk (presented as evidence) is not clear, and it is yet to be found out if it is GK’s.” The complaint was made by SAD (Delhi) chief and former DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna.
