ROHTAK : The family of sub-inspector Dharambir (56), who was shot in his head by some people who freed a gangster from police custody in the Mahendragarh court complex on September 8, have slammed the state government for not extending any help for his treatment.

Dharambir’s son Vikas said his father has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Rewari for the past 48 days, but no one from the government has bothered to visit him to enquire about his health.

Vikas said their hospital bill has reached ₹9 lakh, but they have only received ₹5 lakh from the police department as a loan and another ₹1.3 lakh through crowd-funding.

“The hospital has estimated the total cost of treatment at ₹14.5 lakhs. Last year, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had announced during celebrations of first Mahila Police Diwas that he has increased ex-gratia for seriously injured policemen to ₹15 lakh from ₹5 lakh. But on ground, it seems to be a false promise as we have got nothing from the government so far,” Vikas said.

Vikas said he was presently unemployed and his father’s savings had been spent on the treatment. “My father has been serving in the police force for over 30 years. But this is what we are getting in return in our hard times.”

Rewari superintendent of police (SP) Sangeeta Kalia, who holds additional SP charge of Mahendragarh, said another ₹3 lakh has been sanctioned for the family. She was monitoring the case and assured the family to not worry about money, Kalia said.

“I have forwarded his file as special case, in which they will get 100% reimbursement for treatment. We have also communicated to the hospital to not pressurise the family for money,” she said.

Vikas, however, said they were only getting assurances but no real help. He said the family was thankful to the police department but worries government’s apathy.
