Makeup artist’s murder: Lensman held

A day after a make up artist, Navgeet Kaur alias Geet Brar, 27, was found dead, police arrested a cameraman working in the Punjabi film industry for killing her.

The accused, Manjit Singh Thind, 38, is a resident of Rajpura and owed ₹21 lakh to Ge et. Manjit had set up business of giving profession­al cameras on rent and was also working as director of photograph­y (DoP) in the entertainm­ent industry.

Geet, who belongs to Moga, was staying as a paying guest in Sector 40, Chandigarh. The Rajpura police recovered her body from the focal point area on Wednesday.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) S Bhoopati said Geet and Manjit knew each other well and worked together in the same industry.

“They bought a profession­al camera worth ₹25 lakh in which Geet contribute­d ₹10 lakh on Manjit’s behalf. Manjit promised to give her ₹50,000 per month, but failed to do so,” the SSP said.

The SSP said on October 31, Manjit asked Geet to accompany him to a bank in Cheeka in Haryana to withdraw money and took her on his motorcycle to Samana Patran and then to the Cheeka side, before coming back to Rajpura.

“The accused confessed that they both reached the bank after closing hours and came back to Rajpura. After this, the accused took her to a secluded place on the pretext of taking her to meet his family, where he killed her with his licensed .32-bore pistol on Tuesday around 11pm,” the SSP said. The police said she was shot at point-blank range and suffered bullet injuries in the forehead, neck and stomach.

The SSP said after killing Geet, the accused removed all the evidence .“The accused confessed that Geet was murdered as she was demanding back her money,” the SSP said.
