SHIMLA : Governor Acharya Devvrat inaugurated the four-day long International Lavi fair at Rampur Bushahr in Shimla district on Saturday.

The four-century-old Lavi fair is known for its traditional Kinnauri goods, including woollen cloths and dry fruits.

In the past, the fair remained important for trade between the erstwhile Bushahr state and Tibet.

The shepherds of Kinnaur migrate to warmer places before the onset of winter and on their way, halt at Rampur.

The woollen goods, dry fruits and medicinal herbs brought by them are purchased by the people and the traders of the plains and foodgrains, clothes and utensils are sold.

Speaking on the occasion, governor Devvrat said that Himachal Pradesh is known for its rich culture, customs and traditions, which was evident from the fact that the people celebrate all religious and traditional festivals with great enthusiasm and fervour. “Efforts should be made to preserve the cultural heritage and old glory of the traditional fairs and festivals in the state. The Lavi fair has its own historical importance and is famous not only for trading activities but also for its old traditions,” he added.

Acharya Devvrat urged the people from various sections of the society to come forward to eradicate social evils like female foeticide.

He expressed concerns over the issue of drug abuse and said that the youth should engage in constructive activities .

The governor lauded the efforts of the organisers for making efforts to carry forward the rich traditions of the Lavi fair.

He also inaugurated the ‘Kinnauri market’ and exhibition put up by various government departments.

Deputy commissioner and chairman of the Lavi Fair Organising Committee, Rohan Chand Thakur, honoured the governor with a Himachali cap, shawl and a memento.

Efforts should be made to preserve the cultural heritage and traditional fairs of the state. The Lavi fair has its own historical importance and is famous not only for trading activities but also for its old traditions. ACHARYA DEVVRAT, Himachal governor
